Drugs used to treat diabetes mellitus by lowering glucose level in the blood stream. With the exceptions of insulin, exenatide, liraglutide and pramlintide mostly for type 1 diabetes mellitus, all are administered orally and are thus also called oral hypoglycemic agents or oral antihyperglycemic agents and mostly for type 2 diabetes mellitus. There are different classes of anti-diabetic drugs, chosen depends on the type of the diabetes, age and condition of the diabetic, as well as other factors.

Diabetes mellitus type 1 must use insulin, which must be injected.

Diabetes mellitus type 2 can produce insulin but resistance by cells.  Most groups of medications are oral drugs, and effective for type 2, often in combination.
