Johnny
Arguelles
Johnny Arguelles is the Division Director at CodeStack, a department of the San Joaquin County Office of Education. Johnny is a software engineer born and raised in Stockton, with over 20 years experience in the field. While at CodeStack Johnny has led the development several large software SaaS (software-as-a-service) applications used across the state. He was instrumental in the growth of CodeStack, taking it from 3 full-time staff members, to over 90 today.
Prior to working at the SJCOE, at the age of 19, Johnny co-founded a startup in the Bay Area, which developed the world’s second payment gateway for processing credit cards online. Johnny was part of a small team that pioneered the development of the world’s first payment gateway algorithms, which helped detect and identify fraudulent or suspicious online credit card transactions, and was the world’s first platform that supported multiple merchants on one hosted SaaS model.
While working as a self-taught programmer, Johnny earned his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and saw first-hand the gaps in a traditional higher education setting compared to technology and practices used in the real-world. This, plus Johnny’s passion for coding and community led him to latest initiative, the establishment of CodeStack Academy. In 2018, under the SJCOE, Johnny launched CodeStack Academy, an immersive software engineering school, to create a pipeline of skilled software engineers and tech entrepreneurs in the Stockton region.
